Rice Hull Ash and Its Properties

Rice Hull Ash and Its Properties

What is a rice hull? If we try to find this question the simple answer we will get is rice hulls are the hard protecting coverings of grains of rice. They are the coatings of seeds, or grains, of rice. The husk protects the seed during the growing season and is formed from hard materials, including opaline silica and lignin. Rice hulls are part of the chaff of the rice.

In addition to this rice hulls can be used as building material, fertilizer, insulation material, or fuel. Rice hulls are the coatings of seeds, or grains, of rice. Combustion of rice hulls makes rice husk ash. This ash is a potential source of amorphous silica, which has a variety of applications. Most of the ash is used in the production of Portland cement. Silica is the basic component of sand, which is used with cement for plastering and concreting. This fine silica provides a very compact and unique concrete. The ash is also a very good thermal insulation material. The fineness of the ash also makes it a very good material for sealing fine cracks in civil structures, where it can penetrate deeper than the conventional cement sand mixture.  Being about 95% silica, it is an easy way of transforming silica into the glaze, and the small particle size helps with an early melt of the glaze. A number of possible uses for RHA include absorbents for oils and chemicals, soil ameliorants, a source of silicon, insulation powder in steel mills, as repellents in the form of “vinegar-tar” release agent in the ceramics industry, as an insulation material. Rice hulls are a low-cost material from which silicon carbide whiskers are produced. Rice hulls that are parboiled (PBH) are used as medium for gardening that includes certain hydrocultures. With proper techniques, rice hulls can be burned and used to power steam engines.

Global Recycling is a leading rice husk ash supplier in India. As our mission is to obtain value form the byproducts generated from various industries, we introduce rice husk ash an organic source of silica which have very high insulation properties and very cost effective.
