Rice Husk Ash
Rice husk ash (RHA) is an abundantly available and renewable agriculture by-product from rice milling in the rice-producing countries. Approx 22 % of the weight of paddy is received as husk . This husk is used as fuel in the rice mills to generate steam for the parboiling process. The balance amount is converted into ash during the firing process which is known as rice husk ash ( RHA ). It has the highest proportion of silica content among all plant residues.
Chemical Composition Of Rice Husk Ash
The rice husk contains about 50% cellulose, 25–30% lignin and 15–20% silica. Hence, after the combustion, one-fifth to one-quarter of the rice husk will change into ash. :
Applications Of Rice Husk Ash :
Characteristic Of Rice Husk Ash :
Due to addition of rice Husk ash, concrete becomes cohesive and more plastic and thus permits easier placing and finishing of concrete. It also increases workability of concrete.
As the replacement of cement by RHA in concrete increases, the workability of concrete decreases.
Rice husk is difficult to ignite and does not burn easily with an open flame, unless air is blown through the husk. Also, it has a high average calorific value of 3410 kcal/kg. Therefore, it is a good, renewable energy source. Rice husk can be used as an alternative energy source, i.e. as the fuel in the boiler of a rice-milling kiln to generate electricity.
